Tis not often you're likely to catch a train to 'see off' a nearest and dearest to their final resting place with the station being right in the cemetery itself. (Fawkner Cemetery having one of the last grave-side train stations).
The Spring Vale Cemetery Railway Line branched from the Pakenham line at the current Springvale station, travelling a little over 2.5 kms to the Spring Vale Cemetery Station. (Note the original spelling).
It was opened in 1904 and electrified in 1922; mortuary services stopped in 1943 and passenger (visitors) services finally ceased in 1951, after being suspended in 1950 due to the 55 day state-wide coal strike.
